HOW IT ALL BEGAN In 1900, there were fewer than 3,000 cars on the roads of France. Therefore, very often car travel turned into a real adventure. Nevertheless, the Michelin brothers were firmly convinced that cars were the future. To support the development of the automotive industry and, at the same time, the development of the Michelin Group, they decided to release a small travel guide for motorists, designed to make travel easy, increase people’s mobility and, as a result, increase sales of Michelin tires. The guide was distributed free of charge at workshops and tire centers. The opening pages of the Michelin Guide provided a lot of useful information. In Paris, the guide contained only a list of car manufacturers; and the list of hotels and restaurants appeared later. In 1920, the free distribution of the Michelin guide was discontinued. While visiting one of his distributors in 1920, André Michelin was amazed to see guidebooks being used to prop up a workbench in a workshop. This marked the end of that era. On the same day, it was decided that the guide would be on sale. Because, according to the Michelin brothers, “people appreciate only what they pay for”. In 1920, the guide went on sale at an initial price of seven francs. A list of restaurants with a special classification system was included in the guide for the 1st time. They also removed ads from the guide and added a list of Parisian hotels. Since 1926, stars have been awarded to the best restaurants. HOW IT WORKS A restaurant can receive from one to three stars. One testifies that the restaurant is worth a visit for its high quality cuisine. Two are given to those whose cuisine is so good that it is possible to change the planned travel itinerary for the sake of it. And three is the highest recognition. In addition, Michelin experts use a number of special marks for evaluation. The company’s symbol, the rubber man Bibendum, means «good food for reasonable money». The sign with a fork, knife and plate means «good food». Crossed fork and spoon (one to five icons) — from simple to luxurious restaurant; a cloverleaf sign for responsible consumption establishments. GUIDE MICHELIN IN RUSSIA Russia has already become the 33rd country where Michelin is produced. The first option includes 69 restaurants (all located in Moscow). According to the international director of the guide, Gwendal Pullenek, 2021 was the perfect time for a guide to appear in Moscow. For the past 5 years, Michelin inspectors have watched the Moscow gastronomic scene. Since then, Moscow has acquired its own “culinary identity». Moscow restaurateurs have learned to skillfully work with the country’s culinary heritage. In the future, Michelin will regularly publish the Red Guide in Moscow. Awards: Young chef «- Nikita Poderyagin from the Björn restaurant of modern northern cuisine. For the best service — went to Vitaly Filonov, the manager of the Twins Garden restaurant. Marked but not included in the guide.
The legendary Eliseevsky grocery store on Tverskaya Street in Moscow stops operating in the year of its 120th anniversary. Because of coronavirus year tourists disappeared from the center of Moscow, and many companies could not stand the pandemic. The future of Eliseevsky looks very vague so far. Retail chains don’t want to work there for a number of reasons. For example, expensive maintenance and lack of parking. In addition, this is a cultural heritage site, and you have to follow special requirements for maintenance and repair. THE HISTORY OF ELISEEVSKY GROCERY STORE In the back of the main hall of Eliseevsky grocery store you can find a portrait of a gray-haired man. This is Grigory Grigorievich Eliseev — a famous Russian businessman and the founder of the store. The ancestors of Grigory Eliseev were peasants in the Yaroslavl province. At the beginning of the 19th century, his grandfather Pyotr Eliseev, moved to St. Petersburg and opened a shop on Nevsky Prospekt. People could find here such goods as rum, coffee, tea, spices and other products from European countries. And in 1858, when the trade quickly went uphill, the sons of Peter Eliseev founded the Eliseev Brothers trading house. In the second half of the 19th century, the Eliseevs’ shops were famous throughout St. Petersburg. Because they sold the best foreign wines, fresh raisins, figs and papaya fruits, which could be purchased even in winter. The fame of the Eliseev trading house also went beyond the borders of the Russian Empire. Merchants had their own trading sailboats, owned wine cellars in Portugal, France and Spain and received medals at international exhibitions for their wine collections. In the 1890s, the entire business passed to Grigory Grigorievich Eliseev, the grandson of Pyotr Eliseev. Wishing to strengthen the status of the family firm as one of the most successful in the country, Eliseev decided to open stores in St. Petersburg and Moscow. Therefore, he choosed a mansion built in the Catherine’s era for the store, which once belonged to Princess Zinaida Volkonskaya. Eliseev carried out a thorough renovation in the dilapidated building. He did it in secret: the building was covered with dense scaffolding for more than a year. There were even rumors in Moscow that an Indian pagoda or a pagan temple will appear on Tverskaya. The main product in the luxury store was still wine. By the way, the merchant had problems with the sale of wine. The laws of that time forbade the sale of wine near churches. But the distance from the main entrance of the store to the nearest temple was too small. As a result, Eliseev had to equip a separate entrance for selling wine in just one night. However, the cost of setting up the store quickly paid off. Moscow and visiting aristocracy actively bought rare varieties of Swiss and French cheeses, oriental spices, Japanese and Ceylon teas, truffles, mushrooms and anchovies there. All this was not cheap, but one could buy it only here. It was

There are a number of phrases that foreigners may find not only funny but strange. The phrase «evening bell» (vecherniy zvon) sounds like the chair is warm — «warm chair». The word «mayonnaise» is correspondingly to my on ass («on your fifth point»). «Garlic» (chesnok) is similarly to chess knok. «Pipe» (tryba) is equally to the true bar («real bar»). And finally «dumpling» (pelmen) is the same as pale man («pale man»). There are also Russian words that in different countries are swear words. For Poles the word «match» (spichka) sounds like a filthy language. In Greece the word «ear» (kolos) is an obscene term for buttocks. The Russian word «pool» (bassein) in France should never be pronounced next to a French woman. In that case she might think that you are hinting at the ugly shape of her breasts. In Vietnam, you need to immediately forget about the vernacular «what?» (che), because in this country this word is equivalent to the curse word «bastard». The most famous example from this area is associated with the name of the car «Zhiguli». It is consonant with gigolo (in Russian: a young man, kept by an elderly woman). Because of that, this car has a second name for the European market — «Lada». Another equally famous example is from the movie «Mechanical Orange»: good (khorosho) > horror show. For the Chinese, the Russian word toastmaster (tamada) sounds like a rude curse. If the Russians are shocked by the way the Spaniards call the cat (pis-pis is consonant with the words spoken to Russian children in order to stimulate their urination), then the Arabs may recall a case when a Soviet general at an official reception, having seen a cat, decided to call her in Russian (“ Kis-kis «is consonant with the male genital organ). Also, funny example. An English learner may ask a classmate to translate the innocuous phrase «blue water» into English. «Blevota» (which is consonant with Russian vomit) makes him feel a gloating laugh. At Portugal, such a lingo-shocking phrase would be: «In July overeat pancakes» (In Julio pidaras ohuelos = very bad Russian words). In Arabic: «My brother’s family is the best in the country» [Usrat akhuy atebifi biladi = again very bad RW]. In Chinese: «Dirty gray fox returns to the dorm step by step» ([Hui lyu lyu huli ibu ibu huy sushi = haha the same]). Therefore, be careful with converting thoughts into words 🙂

TAXI Moscow is quite expensive city and the first thing you need to know – don’t take the taxi on the street. It is very important, most of that drivers are not Russian and they hardly can speak English. But the worst thing – they can rob you. The normal price for the taxi from airport is 1000-2000 rubles (15-35$). And please don’t forget about traffic, especially to Domodedovo airport (once it took me 4,5 hours to ride from airport to the city center). Usually the taxi can take you 1-2 hours, for example. Therefore, I advise you to have a couple of extra hours when you go to the airport. So, if you want to get to Moscow from the airport by taxi, I advice to download any app on your choice: Uber Yandex Gettaxi Finally, enter your bank card details in advance in the application to avoid excessive fees. AEROEXPRESS Another way to get to Moscow from the airport is aeroexpress. The website you need to use: https://aeroexpress.ru/en/aero.html In each airport you can find signs with the direction of aeroexpress and buy ticket, it costs 500 rubles (8-9$). The aeroexpress goes every 30-60 minutes from 5 am to 1 am (check the schedule on the website). PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION From/to Vnukovo airport you can take the bus N611/N611c (the price is 50 rubles/1$) or N45/N705M (the price is 150 rubles/2,5$). Go out at Ugo-Zapadnaya metro station. After that, inside the metro it is better to buy the Troika card and replenish it at an ATM or cash office (it costs 50 rubles). Also in the end of your vacations in Moscow you can return the card to the cash office and recieve 50 rubles back.
